Las Venus Ads

Over the past year I have done a series of ads for Las Venus, a stylish furniture and lighting store that is located in ABC Carpet & Home on Broadway. The ads are featured in Modern Magazine, which is a beautiful design, decorative arts, and architecture magazine.

I thought I would add a couple if before images to this post, to give you an idea of the work I put into creating these ads.

All sets were shot in the store room that is pictured in the first image. The second image is just a basic hand pieced mock-up that was made from photos taken in that store room. I created the damask wallpaper in the second ad using one small patch of the design, which was originally black and white. The last ad is the most difficult piece I have ever done, mainly because of the purple rug, which in fact only covered enough of the floor to place the table and chair on it.

The Process

I haven't posted anything here in quite a while and that's not to say I don't have anything to post, it's more that I've been doing so many things that I could post here. For today's post I thought I'd offer some insight to my process and post several images that represent the options I'm considering for a poster I'm currently working on. I think I know which variations I'm leaning toward, but I'd certainly be interested to hear what appeals to other people. Be sure to click on each one to enlarge it for better viewing. As these are drafts, you should be aware that there are place holders in the images, as well as some extra layers that won't be in the final.

Stonewall 40th Anniversary Poster

I had the pleasure of getting to design this template for posters for this project commemorating the 40th Anniversary of Stonewall. The 30 x 40" posters will be featured in windows down Christopher St next month. I look forward to seeing the final outcome. Be sure to click the image below so you can see the larger version. No Place To Run

There's a funny story about the design of this cover for No Place To Run, but I won't go into it just now. Perhaps when I do a follow-up post it'll be somewhat evident. The Simian Bridge

Adrian Kerley, A Boomer's Path

This is a book cover I did for a freelance client. I completed the work on this in December, but I've not gotten to see the final outcome yet. I decided to go ahead and post this anyway, since the work is finished.

I had a lot of fun creating this scene from a handful of source images, most of which were provided by the author. Much time went into making it all look as though it belonged together, as the scene is actually composited from several photos. The castle alone is made up of two photos, then the hill it is standing on is made up of another two another photos, and I used separate photos for the sky and the path. Including all the text layers, this composite is made up of about thirty-six layers.

Ali Velshi, Gimme My Money Back!

I got to work on this cover for CNN's Ali Velshi. Mostly I just formatted the text and made sure things were aligned nicely and that all the colours matched.

If you look carefully you can see the first usage of my archer logo on the spine and on the back cover. I initially wanted the yellow text field to look like a post-it note, but I simplified it to make sure it was in keeping with the design aesthetic, which is more flat and even.

Sterling & Ross Logo

I was asked to redesign the logo for Sterling & Ross, where I intern as a designer. My boss wanted a silhouette of a kneeling archer, so I created a composite image of an archer in Photoshop using bits and pieces of several pictures of sculptures, which I then converted to a vector drawing.

Once I had the basic vector drawing I worked on making it more proportionate and posed how my boss wanted it. Once I'd completed that I tried a number of different text variations until I arrived at what you see here. So far only the silhouette has been used, but I've provided a couple of options for using it with text.

The Pandora Prescription

This is a cover for a book that had already been in print. My job here was to reformat the cover to make it fit a paperback with French flaps on the cover, where it had previously been in print as a hard bound book with a dust jacket. The reformatting was made to sound very simple, but it was actually a rather involved process, as everything had to be either re-sized or shifted, if not both. I also was asked to fix some of the copy,either moving it around, reformatting it, or getting it all aligned. As this cover has a grunge look, I also needed to be conscious that I wasn't cleaning it up too much or that I distressed it in areas that had to be cut out and such. I really enjoyed getting to work on this cover, as I'm all about texture and layering and I look forward to getting to do more of this sort of thing.

Guido's Credos

This is another project that was already under way. The elements were already there, I just made them fit better. I also chose the font scheme. I wanted on one hand to capture the Italian flavour (pun intended), and on the other hand to somehow indicate that this was supposed to be very much his point of view, hence the handwritten font. I think it works well, though I'd have preferred to have the red and green on he back cover the same as the hues on the front.

Healing the Rift

This cover was already under way and was more or less laid out how it needed to be. I came along and cleaned it up a little, tweaking some of the design elements as I went, though this is not a project that I had a whole lot of say in.

Beginning/Long Stone's Throw

The design work I did for this cover was a great learning experience as I took this design from paper back to hard cover format and I created the new layout to match the original front cover. I feel very fortunate to have gotten to work on this cover and I'm pleased with the outcome.
